Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tariffy?

Tariffy is your go-to AI assistant for tackling the often headache-inducing world of Harmonized System (HS) codes in international trade.

Think of it like the trade-savvy cousin of ChatGPT who's super focused on HS codes.

Created by a team of AI experts in Estonia, this platform is like a secret weapon for navigating international trade documentation.

It's been trained on a mountain of real import documents.

Whether it's verifying your current codes or finding new ones, it's designed to keep mistakes at bay and save you time.

And the best part? It's built for team collaboration, so everyone can get in on the action under one subscription.

How was your technology developed?

The technology was developed by artificial intelligence experts in Estonia. The leader of the team followed the 30+ courses specialized in Harmonized System given by the World Customs Organization and engineering large-scale real-world machine-learning models. We use the same technology backing ChatGPT, that we specialized it by training it on millions of real-world imports and examples (including data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection).

Why use Tariffy if the HS table is public?

You can get all the information for free on the official Harmonized Tariff Schedule on the website of the United States International Trade Commission website. Our tool is meant to help you classify and assign HS codes using artificial intelligence.

If it is artificial intelligence, why should I use Tariffy instead of ChatGPT?

The technology behind Tariffy is very similar to ChatGPT. We took a similar engine to ChatGPT and super-specialized it by making it learn and read about millions of customs documents. You can think of Tariffy like a super-specialized ChatGPT (this process is called "fine-tuning"). However, there are a few points to keep in mind. In Tariffy you can work in parallel, you can have different requests at the same time without having to wait for the previous one to. ChatGPT often looks up the answer on the internet instead of thinking by itself. We also support team functionalities to have all your team under one subscription. ChatGPT has a couple of important issues when determining classification, for example, it claims White chocolate is "Chocolate", where from a customs-perspective it is "Sugar confectionery". You can use ChatGPT in conjunction with Tariffy if you want, or any legacy provider, but we believe you'll love our product. Plus you can do multiple HS lookups in parallel on Tariffy.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes, we offer a free trial. You do not need a credit card and you won't be charged until you upgrade.

How are subscriptions organized?

Subscriptions are organized per team. The administrator of the team is responsible for paying the subscription and to manage members. As a user, you can be member of multiple teams at the same time and switch from a team to another team by clicking in the main menu.

Isn't your service a little expensive?

Not at all! It's actually slightly cheaper than ChatGPT and way cheaper than competitors platform. We have spent lot of hours engineering the platform so you can save time. How much time have you lost manually searching obscure HS codes? How expensive is a mistake during declaration? You can even use Tariffy as a way to cross-check and verify your existing HS codes too, and potentially avoid expensive fines. At $19, it's really not expensive considering you can already get back that money in a single hour of work.

Why use a third-party service like Tariffy when I can develop this technology internally?

Yes, you could develop the technology internally, but we're pretty sure that it would obviously cost you more than $19. Developing such service takes time and expertise, and also has certain costs to run. We have designed this platform for you to use and would be happy to help you onboard it.

Are the answers reliable?

Yes, the answers are generally reliable but it is a good idea to have a human to review them. Customs are usually very picky about declaration and it is a good practice to have one or more tool like Tariffy to give its opinion. It's relatively rare that the engine makes mistake, however, sometimes when the information is not so clear, it may assume some criterias for the product you are inquiring about (for example, if you write "apple", it will by default assume "fresh apples"). The platform displays it to you when it assumes something.
